Five priorities for ASEAN in 2020

Asia is on track to be the world’s center of gravity

Vietnam, who will be the ASEAN chair starting January 1, 2020, has set out to further boost intra-ASEAN trade among the ten-country alliance and to ensure that the ASEAN Economic Community is effectively implemented next year.

Using the theme “Cohesive and Responsive”, Vietnam who takes over from Thailand vows to develop continuity, complementarity and creativity within the community. It has set out the five priorities to be achieved under its leadership. These priorities include:

  1. Enhancing the bloc’s performance of its role and contribution to the maintenance of regional peace, security and stability
  2. Boosting connectivity and improving the capacity of adapting to and capitalizing on the Fourth Industrial Revolution
  3. Promoting awareness of the ASEAN Community and its identities to create common values for the group
  4. Reinforcing partnerships for peace and sustainable development with countries around the world
  5. Improving ASEAN’s adaptability and efficiency by reforming institutions and improving the association’s operations
