Swissair wanted to initiate regular flights from Zurich to Tokyo via Bangkok and needed an agent in Thailand to market this new route. After fierce competition with other Swiss firms – after all, the new air link was a milestone in Switzerland’s aviation history – Diethelm Bangkok was awarded the contract, enabling us to contribute to a further step in the process of globalization.
The new direct air link between Zurich and Bangkok changed the way in which business was transacted. For Diethelm, the air route was suddenly an alternative to shipping containers, especially when deadlines were tight. Indeed, shortly after regular flights were introduced, a Schindler elevator had to be airfreighted from Switzerland to the Thai capital for the new wing of the Oriental Hotel, where the urgently needed consignment arrived on schedule.
