Electric vehicle charging stations power up shopping mall parking facilities in Hong Kong

Electric vehicle (EV) charging stations are becoming a must-have for parking facilities in shopping malls and business premises. By providing this feature in their properties, a leading real estate management company was able to leapfrog ahead of the competition to become a benchmark for the sector in Hong Kong.

The customer is a leading real estate development, investment, capital, and property management company that manages real estate investment trusts (REITs) and private equity real estate funds in the Asia Pacific, Europe, the UK, and the US. They own and manage over SGD 66 billion worth of data centers, industrial, office, residential, and retail properties in these markets.

Challenge

As the customer was keen to source and install EV charging stations in its existing shopping mall facilities in Hong Kong, they needed to work with an experienced partner that could help them manage the planning and deployment process.

Among the key requirements for the proposed system were to maximize the efficient turnaround of the vehicles using these facilities, ensure good user experiences, improve driver convenience, and can integrate with the respective shopping mall’s membership activities and retail promotions.

Approach

We started by carrying out a comprehensive feasibility study on the mall’s capability to house EV chargers at its premises. This included finding the best location to place the equipment and the most efficient use of electricity supply to support these chargers.

We proceeded to build the EV chargers, customized the software, and develop a highly user-interactive EV charger kiosk to house the system. We conducted numerous field studies and test runs to evaluate the system’s performance, monitor the potential risks, and fine-tune the system’s efficiency under various operating conditions, scenarios, and environments.

In addition to system installation, our team also provided user and system training, as well as after-sales services support.

Result

Following the successful implementation of the EV charging stations and the supporting systems in the mall, the customer noted that the stations have recorded reliable, accurate, and efficient operations.

The feature has also helped the mall to record increased traffic volume with more cars using the parking facilities. By integrating with the membership and retail management systems, the system helped boost spending and higher visit rates by drivers of electric vehicles.

The success has provided a platform for further integration with the customer’s customer relationship management systems and possibly incorporating a QR code system on the EV charging stations.

The EV charging stations helped to substantially improve user convenience for the mall’s customers. The system will set the benchmark for our other facilities ahead as well.
