Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 was an unprecedented year for most industries. Many struggled to generate revenue while others had to quickly adjust to increased demand levels. This includes the pharmaceutical and food & beverage industries, two sectors that the Indonesian government allowed to operate at up to 50 percent of their optimal operations during the large-scale social restriction implementation to fight the pandemic.

To cope with the increased demand, production lines had to perform better, faster and with higher efficiency. The use of advanced labeling and coding machines with zero-downtime was critical for those two sectors as their operations, competitiveness and product availability were dependent on these equipment.

Challenge

The ongoing pandemic is seeing a substantial increase in demand for consumer goods and pharmaceutical products and this has led to the rising needs from manufacturers to print more product labels and barcodes for their products.

The Indonesian government’s call for all pharmaceutical products to be attached with serialization marking further pushed the demand for barcode printing technology. Serialization is a printed marking that incorporates the manufacturer’s details to enhance the product’s traceability.

As businesses considered the right printing equipment to meet rising demand and government requirements, they also needed to ensure that their investment in the printing machines would not be a burden to their company’s capital expenditure, particularly during these uncertain times.

Approach

Our first approach to help these businesses was to offer Koenig & Bauer Coding’s printing solutions. Our holistic approach to serving the market also expanded to manufacturers who benefitted from our high-speed SOMA printing technology used in flexible packaging processes for food, non-food, labels, shrink sleeves, paper, paper board and aluminium closures.

Result

Our printing, coding and marking solutions helped numerous customers during the pandemic. Among them is one of Indonesia’s largest bakery companies with a presence in other parts of Southeast Asia. After supplying its factory in West Sumatra with Koenig & Bauer Coding’s printer, the customer increased its capability and efficiency in printing labels and barcodes for its products.

Several customers in the food and beverage and pharmaceutical sectors also enjoyed better economic benefits by using the original spare parts and ink supply from Koenig & Bauer Coding. As each liter of ink used for the printing machine can be used for up to two billion ink drops, this means better print quantity with higher financial gains in comparison with competitors’ printing machines.
