On-demand webinar: Optimizing paints and coatings formulations January 01, 2024-February 29, 2024

ZetaClass

Paints and coatings make life more colourful, easier, and safer. Besides being used to beautify substrates, paints and coatings are also used for protection, as anti-skid surfaces, for insulation or as electrical conductors, just to name a few examples.

The high and diverse demands on paints and coatings bring a wide range of formulations such as powder coatings, waterborne coatings, solvent-borne coatings, radiation-curable coatings and more. Complex formulations are produced as different applications require unique combinations of functional components for the desired properties and performance. However, quality control becomes more challenging as product complexity increases. Therefore, to develop high performance products, formulators must possess a precise understanding of the materials’ characteristics and be able to accurately characterize paint properties and predict long-term stability.

In this webinar, our specialists will share some robust and precise analytical methods to investigate and predict the behaviour of raw materials to help formulators optimize their formulations.

Programme Details

Topic 1: Optimizing formulation of pigments in paints and coatings with particle sizing using laser diffraction

Characterization is important in the paints and coatings industry for developing, manufacturing, and qualifying raw materials for use in a coating formulation.  Particle sizing is a part of this characterization process and it affects many properties of coatings such as viscosity, stability, film appearance and weather resistance to name a few. Laser diffraction – a well-established technique for particle sizing will aid in optimizing the formulation. The Mastersizer 3000 which utilizes laser diffraction technology that adheres to ISO standards will help to not only create a robust product with precise performance characteristics and quality attributes, but also save cost through the optimization process.

Topic 2: Direct accelerated stability testing of paint pigments and coating formulations by analytical photocentrifuge analysis

Paints and coatings are one of the major global industries that are worth $150 billion in 2019. More than half of the total paint and coatings produced every year are used for protection and maintenance of residential and commercial structures, while the remaining are used as decoration and protection for industrial products, as well as high-performance coatings. Without paint and coatings, many products and structures would have a much shorter life span and will appear dull. The LUMiFuge analytical centrifuge is the only instrument in the world that enables you to perform physically accelerated, direct and efficient stability testing and ranking of complex paint and coating formulations which combines several functional components to provide the desired properties and performance, using the STEP-Technology®. Classification and recognition of causes of instability of a sample can be determined by observing the fingerprint pattern of the whole sample. This technique is a well-known technique that is compliant to ISO standards.
